When Life Redirects You
At 22 years old, I graduated from college and I felt lost.
Life didn’t look anything like what I had imagined. I was searching for purpose, for direction, for stability in a season that kept shifting under my feet.
Every plan I made seemed to fall apart. Every dream felt detoured.
I was unhappy in the transition, struggling to reconcile the life I wanted with the life I was living.
The Turning Point of Choosing to Embrace the Unexpected
Eventually, I realized I had two choices:
Resist every change and stay frustrated
Or embrace the life in front of me and find joy where I was
I chose the second.
Instead of seeing every new place of our military life as a disruption, I decided to make every place my home. Instead of longing for what I thought life should be, I learned to love the life I was given.
And slowly, what I discovered was unexpected.
God didn’t take away my dreams; He reshaped them into a better life. It wasn’t an easy one, but it turned out to be an amazingly fulfilling life.

Ruth’s Story of a Life Redirected
Ruth’s life took an unexpected turn too.
She had one plan which was to build her life in Moab with her husband. But when tragedy struck and her husband died, her entire future changed. She faced a choice: stay in the familiar or step into the unknown.
Ruth is famous for saying these words.
Don’t make me leave you, for I want to go wherever you go and to live wherever you live; your people shall be my people, and your God shall be my God;
I want to die where you die and be buried there. May the Lord do terrible things to me if I allow anything but death to separate us.
Ruth 1:16 - 17 Living Bible
By choosing to follow Naomi to Bethlehem, Ruth embraced a life she hadn’t planned.
She chose the unknown path that ultimately led to provision, redemption, and a future she never could have orchestrated herself.
Her story reminds me of my own from this perspective, sometimes the path you didn’t choose becomes the path that saves you.
When God Redirects You, It’s for a Greater Purpose
If I could go back and tell my younger self anything, it would be this:
Your plans might be good, but God’s plans are immeasurably better.
I’d remind myself that:
What feels like a setback is often a setup for something better
Delays are not denial; they’re divine direction
Wherever you are, be fully there, because God is working in every season
Life has a way of unfolding in places and ways we never expected. And when we stop fighting the shift, we start seeing the blessing.
I have Two Questions for You
What would you tell your younger self?
Have you ever had a plan completely change, only to realize later that it was for the better?
If so, I’d love to hear your story.

A Prayer for the Road You Didn’t Plan
God, Thank You for seeing the whole of our lives when we can only see the part directly in front of us.
When our plans change, give us the wisdom to recognize Your direction instead of assuming we’ve lost our way. Help us release the future we imagined when You’re leading us toward something we could not have imagined for ourselves.
Give us courage for unfamiliar places, patience in seasons we do not understand, and the grace to be fully present where You have placed us today.
And when we look back, let us recognize the ways You were providing, protecting, redirecting, and preparing us even when we could not see it.
Help us trust to You with what comes next.
In Jesus’ name,
Amen.
